It’s April. The birds are chirping, your group chat is making plans, and your favourite shop is teasing something spicy. It’s the stoners Christmas.

But before you fire up that pre-roll, let’s spark a little knowledge: why is 420 even a thing? And no — it’s not the number of active cannabinoids. And sorry, it’s not Snoop Dogg’s birthday either. (We Googled it.)

Let’s rewind.

🌿 Origin Story: The Waldos & the Weed That Never Was

Picture this: 1971. San Rafael, California. Five high schoolers who call themselves The Waldos (peak stoner energy) hear a rumour about a secret, abandoned weed crop somewhere on Coast Guard property.

They meet up after school every day at… you guessed it 4:20 PM to hunt for it. No map. No luck. Just vibes, and a hunger for some good times.

This mysterious crop was never found, but the legacy was born. 

The Waldos started using ‘420’ as a code name for getting high, an alien language to the non-stoner community.

✌️ From Code Word to Counterculture Icon

Fast forward a bit. One of the Waldos had a connection to the Grateful Dead world — you know, flower crowns, tie-dye, and full-on psychedelic road trips. The term “420” caught on with the Deadhead community, and eventually, the High Times mag crowd. Suddenly a culture phenom is born.

By the ‘90s, it had gone full viral (the analog kind).

420 = weed culture. Period.

📆 So Why April 20?

Once 420 became canon, April 20 (4/20) practically scheduled itself.

The date turned into a global excuse celebration for rolling one, passing it left, and vibing in whatever way works for you. It’s a day to spark joy, support the plant, and nod in silent agreement with every other stoner who’s also doing the exact same thing.
